| These Varieties Perform Better in the Heat We have trialed hundreds of the larger tomato varieties in our desert test garden and 99% of them have failed to set fruit in our heat. Even the 'heat tolerant' varieties failed our trials, except for the larger fruited varieties we offer. The varieties listed here performed exceptionally well. Most larger varieties will drop their blossoms when the heat arrives, and for that reason this is a very short list from which to choose. We have had fabulous success with these varieties when combined with following the new growing method in the book, "Growing the Tomato in Las Vegas in Terrible Dirt and Desert Heat." For the Heirloom lovers, sadly I add, we have been unable to find any of the larger heirloom varieties that set fruit in our desert heat. Brandywine was a flop when the hot temperatures arrived, as were the many other mid to larger size heirloom varieties we grew. Most cherry variety tomatoes will do well in hot climates and there are many to choose from on other websites and at your local nursery. It's the medium to larger fruited varieties that seem to fail our heat test. Because of this we don't intend to be a supplier of every variety of tomato seed, only those varieties that produced well in our climate. Luckily for all of us, the varieties we offer are very good tasting varieties. In fact, we find them sensational. And, if you grow them like we do, your friends will be amazed that you can pick tomatoes like we pick in terrible dirt and desert heat. Keep checking-in with us as we are having some good results from our 2004 preliminary tests of some new experimental heat-tolerant hybrid tomatoes. |
